The Cut is an old boating term for the canal, because it is cut (or dug) into the landscape. So “on the cut” means cruising on the canal, and the colours are reflected in this yarn. Sky blue, white fluffy clouds, and the green-brown sliver of the water. Although quite highly variegated, the colours are light and will allow textured patterns to shine through while lending visual interest to simple ones. The gentle colours blend beautifully in the finished project.

Fibre Content: 100% Bluefaced Leicester Wool
Specification: 4 ply / fingering weight – 400m / 100g
Fibre: Sourced from UK flocks
Processing: Spun in Yorkshire, hand dyed by us in Northamptonshire

This is a smooth, worsted-spun and plied yarn with a gorgeous lustre and great definition! The Bluefaced Leicester breed produces wool that is both strong and next-to-skin soft, making it ideal for a wide range of projects. This yarn will work fantastically in shawls, socks, jumpers, and other accessories. It wears well over time and pills very little. The stitch definition is excellent, making it suitable for beautiful stocking stitch, textured knit-purl patterns, thick and squishy brioche, and well-defined cables.

We hand dye all our yarn in our studio in the Royal Ordnance Depot, Weedon, by the Grand Union Canal. Our yarn has been hand dyed in small batches, and the colour consistency between batches is very good but can’t be guaranteed, so we recommend that you buy enough skeins for your project. If your project uses more than one skein, we also recommend that you alternate / stripe the skeins throughout.

When it comes to blocking or washing your project, use lukewarm water with your favourite wool wash, and lay flat to dry. We take great care to thoroughly set the dye and rinse the yarn afterwards, but differing water temperatures and chemicals can cause some dye to bleed. If you’re using it in a multicoloured project, we recommend washing a swatch first to test for colour-fastness.

Thank you! I needed one more skein of Nene 4 ply in colour “On The Cut” to go with 2 skeins of the same yarn and colour that I’d bought from a yarn shop. They didn’t have any more so I ordered it directly from River Knits. Despite my having paid for 2nd class postage it arrived within two days so, I’m very impressed by that! I like the fact that the skein was carefully packaged in brown/natural tissue paper and a sturdy brown paper bag. There’s something very satisfying about the crisp, crunchiness of brown paper! Keep up the good work producing your lovely yarns and packaging them this way!

This is the most expensive hank of yarn I have ever bought and my first hand dyed yarn purchase! It’s frankly the most beautiful yarn I have ever bought. You have perfectly captured the colours of life on the canals! To be knitted up into socks in time for my next narrowboat holiday on the Leeds Liverpool canal next month and photos to follow!
